Although Martin Luther King, Jr. never said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” he did say “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”
Unless you live in a cave and/or have no access to social media you should be aware that Monday, January 20, 2020 there is a 2nd Amendment Rally in the great state of Virginia. The rally will be at the Pocahontas Building, 900 E. Main Street in Richmond and move to the capitol steps.
When our Founders said “we” were responsible for keeping the Republic a Constitutional Republic, they weren’t kidding. I’m going to be honest, we’ve been slacking. For years now instead of voting for “representatives” who represent what we want for our futures, we have gotten into the pattern of voting for people representing their own self-interests or a political party we think we know.
Animal lovers take heart, Delegate Mark Chang (D), Anne Arundel County, will be introducing a bill that seeks to restrict the number of euthanizations an animal shelter can perform. (HB57). This bill hopes to put a dent in the 90% kill rate at Maryland shelters.
Mr. Hagen was irritated by the fact Maryland doesn’t consider balloon releases “littering”. The law only addresses objects on the ground, it is silent on objects in the sky. (Maryland Annotated Code – Criminal Law Section 10-110 - Litter Control Law.) Objects floating in the sky aren’t addressed because they can’t be enforced. There is no way to know, when or where the object that went up, came down.
Balloon releases are “symbolic speech” just like flag burning which is protected by the First Amendment of United States Constitution. The Supreme Court has upheld that freedom of speech protects actions that society finds offensive. As offensive as Councilman Kai Hagen may find the release of helium filled balloons that doesn’t trump our right to freedom of expression.
