Democrats Excesses Far Outweigh Those By Republicans in MD

August 12, 2002

I enjoyed Mr. Ron Wolf's column "Senator Mooney Assimilates Frederick County".

First, as a bona fide Trekkie, I take issue with the comparison of Mr. Mooney to the Borg. The Borg are a model of efficiency, very similar to a bee colony. There may be millions of them yet they get the job done without stepping on everyone's toes, unlike both Republicans and Democrats.

The rest of the column does quite well in pointing out the issues where Mr. Mooney may have been mistaken.

Then I get to the beginning part of the last section: "Right now, the mission of the Democratic Party is to stop the out-of-control excesses of the Republican Party."

I almost split my sides laughing when I read that the Democrat mission is to stop the excesses of the Republicans.

Perhaps before you remove the mote from the Republican's eye, you'd best remove the beam from your own party's eye, (to borrow from Matthew 7:3-4).

Under the state's Democrat leadership, both from the governor's mansion and the legislature, spending in Maryland has put us into a nice little hole. I beg and plead with Mr. Wolf to explain away that nice little 'excess'.

What ever happened to the money from the lottery that was supposed to go toward education? Some spend-happy Democrats decided to buddy up with their big-money lawyers and corporations and spend it on sports teams instead. And they say the Republicans are the ones who are in bed with the big money. Sheesh.

I find it very sad that the Democrats went ahead and helped fund Raven's Stadium and Camden Yards during years when Baltimore City schools held bake sales to buy books.

The money from the tobacco settlement? After the Democrats pet projects and pet lawyers were paid off, then it trickled down to where it was needed.

Please, Mr. Democrat, tell me why this happens? Unlike in our federal legislature where the difference between the majority and minority party has been very close for almost a decade now, Maryland has been an overwhelmingly Democrat controlled state, at least for as long as I can remember.

Well, the old saying is true: a Democrat never met a tax hike he didn't like.

Please Mr. Wolf, try to reign in your fellow Democrats after this coming election. After you can stop the extreme wastefulness of your own colleagues, then and only then will it be time to go after the Republicans.

Michael Barnes, Frederick
