As Long as We Remember...

What Can We Expect?

July 21, 2006

I was very excited about this year's political season; an open U.S. Senate seat, two Democrats fighting to get a chance to run for governor, an open attorney general seat, and unrest within the Democrat party over William Donald Schaefer.

But with the primary election less than two months away, I have a simple question: Have we in Western Maryland seen any of these numerous candidates running for a state wide office in the last 90 days, last 30 days, at all?

The governor and lieutenant governor have made numerous trips to our area and are scheduled to be back at least once each month up to Election Day. But what about the Democrats? Has anybody seen, Martin O'Malley, Ben Cardin, Kwesi Mfume, Josh Rales or Dennis Rassmusen anywhere in western Maryland?

How about any of the other Democrat candidates for attorney general, or comptroller? Has anybody seen/heard a television or radio commercial for any of these candidates that did not air on a Baltimore or Washington media outlet?

According to the Maryland State Board of Elections web site, as of April 30, 2006, there are 96,904 registered Democrats in Western Maryland (Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties). This represents 6% of all the Democrat voters statewide. To paraphrase the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin: Don't these potential voters deserve just a little respect?

Do these Democrat candidates not care about the people and problems that face Western Maryland? Or, are we getting an early glimpse of what we, in Western Maryland, can except if any of these Democrats is elected; and if they are elected will they ignore Western Maryland like Parris and Paul did during their tenure in elected office?

I sure hope not, because if so, we in Western Maryland will be losers in the end!
