I did not come to bring peace, but a sword
The Democrat presidential candidates are vowing to use government control to force incorporation of their ideology into religious doctrine.
Here’s the candidates’ logic. Religious freedom is fine as long as its doctrines are in lock step with the progressive left and any judicial mandates. If a church deviates from the progressive playbook, then the full power of government will be brought to bear.
We can’t say we weren’t warned that this would happen. Someone told us: “Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.” That someone was Jesus Christ.
Many churches and supposed Christians are addressing the conflict Jesus foretold by changing their church doctrine as fast as the progressives try to change social norms and the law. Are the church leaders following Jesus’s teachings in bending?
Jesus told us:
“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn
“a man against his father,
“a daughter against her mother,
“a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
“a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.
“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10)
No one said following Christ would be easy. Most who witnessed Jesus’s miracles chose not to follow. Fewer follow today.
For those who do follow and lead through forming churches, what will you do when “governors and kings” threaten your freedom unless you bend your doctrine to their will?
Will you modify your doctrine to keep the tax break so you can buy that new bus or playground? Or will you be a Christian?
