A Hymn for a Lost Cause…

Jason Miller

There was a lot of commotion in some political circles this past week. A disastrous press conference held by Democrat Ben Jealous is a tell-tale sign of things to come for Maryland Democrats and Jealous their pick for governor.

Mr. Jealous was asked by a reporter if he was a socialist and he responded by cursing at the reporter for asking the question. Political hay was had. The Ben Jealous temper tantrum is deeper than his race against Gov. Larry Hogan.

The mood was depressing for many Democrats in the aftermath of last Tuesday's nationwide primary and special election races. Republicans held Ohio in a special election to the dismay of socialist-leaning Democrats, like New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Democrats crisscrossed the country to implement Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's own campaign strategy that centered heavily on the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic Party. It largely failed.

The Democrat National Committee (DNC) called Ms. Ocasio-Cortez the new future of the Democratic Party. Their idea was to export her winning strategy nationwide. The day after last week’s elections, both the DNC and the Senator Sanders faithful saw the once mighty Democrat Socialist momentum evaporate as quickly as it had gained steam. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is undeterred, and it’s hurting Ben Jealous.

Like a pied piper from Caracas, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has united Bernie Sanders Democrats along a self-centered and self-righteous yellow brick road to populist socialism. Anyone remotely attached to the Sanders platform is getting extra scrutiny from the press by proxy. Ben Jealous included.

MS. Ocasio-Cortez's recent interviews with reporters are now the punchlines to online jokes and general mockery by Republicans and Democrats alike. The Maryland Democrats, who were once open to an endorsement of Mr. Jealous are running to Governor Hogan in light of Jealous' own socialist platform for Maryland.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's disastrous radio and television appearances are reminiscent of the great "Aleppo" flop that ended Gary Johnson's Libertarian quest for legitimacy in the 2016 presidential election. The Jealous F bomb that was dropped in response to a question on his description of himself as a “socialist,” demonstrates his attempt to put distance between his current self and his socialist self in the primary.

It's funny how these deep blue socialist leaders are either green with envy or red with rage after watching a 28-year-old bartender commandeer the helm of the Sanders Democrat ship. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has created a cult personality among socialistic millennials in a manner like that of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez. Remember that that country’s current President Nicolás Maduro announced that socialism had failed in his country this past week as well.

The original Sanders ship was once thought to be engineered and largely constructed for Democrats like Ben Jealous. The ship is starting to sink as Ms. Ocasio-Cortez wildly lurches further and further to the left. Inconvenient questions with respect to the cost of free healthcare, free college tuition and free job training in the face of other costly state responsibilities have become more frequent. This pseudo-communist has painted the Sanders/Jealous Democrat platform with a broad brush of incompetence and wishful thinking.

Governor Larry Hogan and the Republican National Committee have started running television ads linking Mr. Jealous to Bernie Sanders’ platform and his previous remarks over the last four years.

The mighty Ben Jealous ship has hit the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ice-burg. His ship is sinking. How many rats will jump into Governor Hogan's life boat for Democrats? Many Democrats already have. We can expect that even more will.

The upbeat hymns of the party faithful will push Ben Jealous on until November. To some in the know, they're pushing a cause that is already lost.
