The Ranking Memberís Deflections
Who is the progressive left’s greatest defender these days? In the House of Representatives, it is Maryland’s own Elijah Cummings. He stands in the way of transparency by providing cover for abortion provider Planned Parenthood.
Representative Cummings, a Democrat from Baltimore, has been in Congress since 1996. He represents a good portion of Baltimore City as well as the most of rural Howard County.
As the ranking member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Mr. Cummings has refused to work with the majority party even in the face of indisputable facts.
In the defense of Planned Parenthood’s sale of human body parts, and despite the admission that clinicians knowingly alter procedures to assure the “tissue” remains intact – partial birth abortions, Mr. Cummings and Rep. John Conyers (D., MI) find no credible evidence that Planned Parenthood “has done anything unlawful." Instead they have chosen to deflect the capture on video of a human tragedy through blatant intimidation of the whistle blowers in this case.
They state that the focus should be on the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and the “…potentially illegal actions of a radical anti-abortion group that has admitted to falsifying documents, lying to their own contributors, and deceptively editing secretly-recorded videos in a three-year crusade against Planned Parenthood."
Despite the fact that there are thousands of clinics that offer women’s health services, the possibility that the federal government would cut off funding to Planned Parenthood put Mr. Cummings on the attack. "Millions of women across the country rely on Planned Parenthood for critical health services, and they should not be denied their rights under the law and the Constitution based on the Center for Medical Progress's warped – and ultimately unsuccessful – effort to entrap Planned Parenthood."
The idea that U.S. congressmen describe these staunch pro-life defenders effort as warped is condescension at its worst. What is warped are the reactions of the clinic workers in describing the body parts of the premature boys and girls that they have just dismembered.
Mr. Cummings openly states that Planned Parenthood has done nothing illegal, and in contrast to David Daleiden’s organization – the Center for Medical Progress – which he states “may have violated numerous state and federal laws in their clandestine effort to roll back the rights of millions of women across the country who rely on the legal and critical health care services provided by Planned Parenthood every day."
As far as I know partial-birth abortions and ending pregnancies after the fetus is 20- weeks old, in many jurisdictions are illegal.
The Investigative journalism that has been done by those opposed to the progressive agenda can unnerve the left. The response by these Democratic Party leaders that are threatening the CMP for producing and releasing these Planned Parenthood videos instead of focusing on the wholesale slaughter of millions for profit is what is disturbing.
In the past Congressman Cummings might have been seen as the House’s champion on ethics, transparency and open government. He is anything but now.
