Unique and Different Out the Window
In case you missed it, on June 25 the Maryland Board of Education unanimously adopted the Next Generation Science Standards created by Achieve, Inc.
To recap: Achieve, Inc. was started in the late 90’s by Bill Gates (Microsoft), Craig Barrett (Intel) and Louis Gerstner, Jr. (IBM) – not for the love of education, but because of the billions of dollars available to them if they control education.
I’ll remind you, Mr. Gerstner was the gentleman who said during a National Governors Convention that education is big business, why are we not in it. He also said if he could, he would tell then President-elect Barack Obama to abolish the 50-state departments of education so it would be easier to get their education reforms through.
Guess what, they have successfully done so via federal stimulus bribes in the Race to the Top grants and the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and C3 (College, Career & Civic Life) social studies “framework.”
Not only do Mr. Gates, Mr. Barrett and Mr. Gerstner have control over the Science Standards, they now have control over almost every aspect of education because they brought us the Common Core Standards.
Reflect on this a moment: these men have successfully taken over 100% of the education system in the country. It appears money cannot buy everything, but it can buy education.
You say, “Cindy, that’s not correct, not all states adopted the standards.” True, but what they have done is forced text book, software and resource creators to align their materials to the Common Core and Next Generation Standards.
Every child, everywhere in the United States and her territories, will be learning exactly the same thing at the exact same time. Homeschool, private school, charter school, it doesn’t matter because the standards are now being imbedded within the educational resources. Even colleges are being aligned to these standards.
I don’t know about you, but that creeps me “the hell” out.
Even if states back out of the standards, if they continue to use the new resources, our children will still get an education designed by corporate billionaires with no background in education and whose goal is to make money on both the front and back ends.
On the front end they get the billions in resource creation, professional development, testing, etc. On the back end they get an employee “they” created through the new education model of “training human capital” for the 21st Century workforce. These phrases are used over and over. Why parents aren’t getting boiling mad is beyond my understanding.
Forgive me if I am cynical about the reasons these men are throwing their money around to carve an education model that looks eerily socialistic.
Traditional education according to Donna Garner of Education News: phonics, grammar, correct usage/spelling, cursive, classical literature, expository/persuasive/research writing, four math functions taught to automatically, fact-based and discreet courses in algebra I & II, geometry, calculus, United States history, world history, botany, biology, physics and chemistry.
The new Common Standards education per Ms. Garner: emphasis on subjectivity, feelings, emotions, beliefs, multiculturalism, political correctness, social engineering, globalism, evolution, sexual freedom, environmental extremism, global warming, victimization, (I’ll throw in activism), diversity, de-emphasis on factual knowledge such as the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Founding Fathers and American exceptionalism.
You might be scratching your head now thinking: “There goes that right wing nut-bag Rose again” and perhaps you are correct; but ponder this a spell.
In Maryland’s Department of Education, Superintendent Lillian Lowery’s June 25, 2013 recommendation to the State Board of Education regarding the Next Generation Science Standards included…
“The following conceptual shifts in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) demonstrate what is new and different about the NGSS:
· K-12 Science Education Should Reflect the Interconnected Nature of Science as it is Practiced and Experienced in the Real World. (code for man-made global warming?)
· 4. The NGSS Focus Deeper Understanding of Content as well as Application of Content. (code for less information to make room for “preferred” information?)
· 6. The NGSS are designed to prepare students for college, career and citizenship.”
Citizenship? Infusing citizenship within Science? Why?
If you haven’t already, it’s time to take a deep look at the standards. Do you want a social education or an academic education for our children? Do you want one we design or one corporate billionaires design?
Better hurry and make up your minds, schools are busy being converted into the training grounds for progressive worker bees.
Doubt me? During the June 12 Board of Education meeting* one of Frederick County Public Schools staff was presenting for Substance Abuse Prevention and said students would have “a day of activism” to “stand up to big tobacco.”
Will there be a day of “activism” to “stand up to Planned Parenthood?” Is it the function of schools to tell a child "what" they should stand up for?
Have you read our county school system’s website lately: “…to prepare students for the demands of a global society, it is essential that we adjust our instruction Pre-K – 12…”
How do you admit in one statement that we are global (read, diverse) while simultaneously proclaiming you can successfully teach a diverse population using “common” standards?
Our school system has 64 schools, each school uses pretty much the same “standards,” yet each school has as different outcome. Shouldn’t we then design a standard that is more school specific in order to reach these “diverse” groups of students?
