America’s Political Direction Betrays Its Veterans
Since Americans first decided to fight for their independence roughly 1,196,000 military members gave their lives for this great political experiment we call the United States of America. At least another 1,478,000 were wounded. These numbers are approximations taking into account the most notable wars and military actions.
Those numbers represent a huge sacrifice on the part of individuals and families for an idea that a country based on the rule of law grounded in our Constitution is worth defending. For those who died and many that were injured, they give up their future, their dreams and their families for us. Along with them, the sacrifices of their families cannot be minimized. For every number mentioned above represents, a family that was also grievously affected by the loss or injury of a loved one. It is not only the ideals upon which this country was founded, but the huge cost and sacrifice associated with its defense that make it so precious.
Today, when someone joins the military they take an oath of office in which they promise to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same.”
The oath for senators and congressman states the same thing as does one of the two oaths taken by Supreme Court justices. The presidential oath as established in Article 2, Section 1 (of our Constitution) also mentions “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” It is important to mention these facts so people realize what our government officials are supposed to be doing. Today it seems as if they’re doing anything but being true to their oath of office.
As we take stock with what is happening in our nation, there are some very disturbing trends that should concern all of us as they directly affect the long-term survivability of the United States as a world power and a land of freedom and prosperity.
Our debt is over $16 trillion and climbing fast – with no end in sight. The outcome of the skyrocketing debt will be the complete financial collapse of the United States economy. There is an openly aggressive assault on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which is the one that ensures all other rights and freedoms granted in the Constitution are protected. It states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
There is an attack on the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom. Every day atheists are winning court cases in an effort to stamp out religious expression, claiming that the First Amendment prohibits public expression of religious belief. This is blatantly false as the First Amendment clearly states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
The attack on religion in this country is rather interesting as it seems geared toward fighting Christianity and Judaism, but is willing to make allowances for Islam and Atheism. Yet many of the principles upon which this country was founded are based in Judeo-Christian belief and ethics. Islam certainly had nothing to do with the founding of this country.
Those are only some of the major news items of the last few years. Other issues of serious consequence include the continued unchecked expansion of the federal government’s power and intrusion into those areas under the domain of state and local government. Quite a bit of this is accomplished through the regulation process and the numerous federal agencies given almost unchecked power to develop and enforce regulations at the behest of the Executive Branch of government, including redistribution of wealth.
Presidential power also increased over the last several administrations beyond what was envisioned by our Founding Fathers. We have presidents who take over private companies, circumvent the Congress, rule by fiat (Executive Order) and write signing statements when signing bills sent to them by Congress indicating they may not enforce the law as written. We now have a president looking for a way to bypass the fiscal responsibility of Congress by unilaterally raising the debt ceiling claiming the 14th Amendment allows that type of action. To be fair it is Senate Democrats who are pushing this idea.
The bottom line is simply that the Constitution was written by our Founding Fathers in an effort to prevent the centralization of power in a monarch, an elite political ruling class, or tyrannical central government. It is those ideals that our veterans defended with their very lives and limbs. It is those ideals for which their family sacrificed. It is those ideals that will ensure a country where success is celebrated and greatness can be achieved.
The liberal or progressive view of a large central government controlling every aspect of our lives and making people dependent slaves is a cancer that is eating the soul of our country. As citizens we are allowing this power grab by our elected officials and are doing nothing to stop it.
This cancer called liberalism – if not unchecked – will destroy this country. We will no longer be a world leader or a place where greatness is celebrated. We will end up like Greece and other countries around the world where liberal socialist ideas failed. It’s already happening here; all you have to do is look at any large city run by liberals, or the state of California; all broke, all failing and all with rising violence.
There are liberals who served honorably and sacrificed in our military and should be commended. That said, their current political beliefs are bad for this country and past service does not give them license to help destroy it.
Allowing this to happen betrays our veterans and their families who sacrificed so much for this great country. We are also betraying our future generations. This is unconscionable! This is unforgivable! And it must stop now!
