Hand-in-Hand: Hypocrisy and Taxes

Joan Marie Aquilino

The G-8 is coming, no federal money following, money from your pockets is going, going, gone. Taxes are rising. Maryland ranks 40th in the country for places to run a business. Gay marriage proponents got the high five from President Barack Obama with little to nothing else.

Well, isn’t this all so very special.

The G-8 is coming and I’ve really no problem in theory. However, according to news reports, Chicago is offered money up front while Frederick is just told it is coming and there’s no money.

I know my county well and I know that no matter what is or isn’t offered, we will rise to the occasion and show our best. Thank you to all those intimately involved in this process. You are appreciated for all you are doing. I welcome our visitors and ask them to enjoy the wonderful aspects of Frederick and take back home some fond memories.

While you are here, please remember that this is our home, and we hope you treat with respect and honor all that we offer.

To our residents there are many events going on this weekend and I pray your attendance at those events won’t be hampered by the G-8 events in any way, shape, or form. Do your best to go out and enjoy as well as celebrate Frederick.

As we all are aware, the Maryland’s governor ordered the legislators to reconvene for an expensive Special Session this week, for the sole purpose of raising taxes as well as anything else that wasn’t nailed down. There are no spending cuts in this new budget. Let me repeat myself in case you didn’t understand it. There are no spending cuts, only new and higher taxes and more spending.

As with President Obama, Gov. Martin O’Malley may be the governor, but that doesn’t give him the right to raise taxes and tell us it’s a cut. He doesn’t own Webster and doesn’t have the right to change the definition of words. I’d love for both men to give their definition of the word “fair.”

There are sources all around explaining exactly how the budget is being raised and you are being taxed. No need to do a repeat performance here. If you need any of the sordid, disgusting details of what is happening, I’ll be more than happy to give you the details, just email me (address below).

Amendment after amendment were put on the House of Delegates floor this week, pointing out numerous aspect of this budget that were blatant lies, manipulation and pure money grabs. However, when it was pointed out that Governor O’Malley fought hard to give Gays & Lesbians the right to marry, well then, he turns around and gives them a marriage tax to boot.

All I can say is – welcome to our world and what marriage is costing you.  Please don’t be blind to what just happened. If you stay single, you get to make more than if you get married, to the tune of $50,000. Think about it. We all just got screwed, and no one is smiling except the governor and his henchmen.

A recent poll by will show our beloved state is dropping in the rankings of where business and workers wants to be. It’s not in Maryland. We rank 40th on a list of 50 states.

Welcome to the bottom 10. Our neighbor Virginia is in the top 10. The states ranking highest in the poll are all also Right to Work states, where the obvious trend is that this is where people are going to work.

A quote from the full article is very telling. “It is perhaps no coincidence that Texas and Florida have the highest net migration of people to their states from 2001 to 2009. (By contrast, New York and California lost over 1.6 million in net migration out of the states, respectively, over the same period…”

Please take the time to read through the entire article. It presents some very interesting perspective for those wanting to run businesses, own them; or, yes, even work for one.

My last but not least little vignette, although not pleasant, is to mention the recent coming out in favor of gay marriage that President Obama shared with us. He did nothing more than pepper his campaign fundraising with his statement.

In the very same brief he stated just as firmly that it’s a state issue. He manages to take control of immigration and health by ripping it from states’ control; yet he can’t find the moral high ground to do the same for gays and lesbians.

What he said is: I’m for you but I’ll do nothing to help you. The president has been giving this community nothing but lip service since he was campaigning in 2007-2008.

I sure hope, at the very least, the gay community pays attention and holds his feet to the fire. Either you help us or you keep your money and help yourselves.

Don’t give him money because he says the right words when his actions reflect just the opposite.

I’m not making a judgment call either way. I’m just stating the facts of what is really going on with this president. It’s not about you and your rights. It’s about him and his campaign finances, nothing more, nothing less.

Pay very close attention because the governor of Maryland just did the same thing to you. As I mentioned earlier, he wants you to have the ‘right’ to get married so he has the ‘right’ to tax you more.

. . . . .'til next time . . .

As always, I’d love to hear from you; so, let me know what’s on your mind by emailing, or contacting me directly at

“Just Joan” saying, be safe and “don’t believe everything you think.”
